This bowl of chocolate paleo and gluten-free overnight oats doesn’t just look amazing, it tastes pretty awesome too!
The deliciously creamy oats are high in fibre, nutrients, vitamins and antioxidants, and topped off with sweet cherries, dragon fruit, figs, as well as the antioxidant superfood, blueberries.
All in all, this truly is a breakfast super bowl!
Porridge is considered a no-no to those who choose to strictly adhere to what they assume is a true Paleolithic diet, which makes no sense to me as oats have been around for considerably more than a hot minute.
However, oats have been completely struck off most so-called ‘paleo’ lists, which is a shame really as oats are extremely good for you.
Personally, I think it’s important to remember that the point of the paleo diet is to eat foods that are as unrefined as possible and as pure as nature intended.
It isn’t about being too particular or going all spazzy over what foods one can and cannot eat.
I mean, if anyone from the ‘Paleo Enforcement Brigade’ were to try and convince me that there existed a set of health conscious cavemen who (whilst sporting designer caveman hair ‘buns’, beards and tattoos of dinosaurs, no doubt!) refused to eat grains, I’d seriously have to tell them to go and get a life!
Obviously if, for medical or health reasons, you have to omit certain foods from your diet then of course, it would make sense to do so, be it gluten or refined carbohydrates.
However, to omit foods that have existed since the paleolithic era for not being in line with a paleo diet is borderline insane and equal to those who firmly believe that quinoa is pronounced ‘keenwah’.
If that were the case, then we no longer squint but ‘skeent’, those named Noah are actually called ‘Nwah’, and apparently, we’ve all been mispronouncing the word ‘queen’ for centuries!
I think you see my point.
I don’t care what any only Waitrose shopping / solely Whole Foods munching / strictly Starbucks coffee drinking set have to say, if it’s spelt ‘q-u-i-n-o-a’, then it’s pronounced ‘QU – I – NO – A‘!
‘Keenwah’… please, don’t make me larf. ?
Anyway, I believe that if a natural food causes no adverse reactions, it is totally fine, and that includes porridge.
The porridge I used for this recipe is gluten-free which is even better.
Rich, creamy and mega healthy, this porridge was made by combining all healthy and NATURAL ingredients and leaving to set in the fridge overnight.
Extremely filling, it’s the ideal breakfast and is made even more healthy with the added fruits garnished on top.
Blueberries are renowned for their high antioxidant properties and thus, considered a superfood so it made perfect sense to add those bad boys to the mix just before serving.
On top of that, I added cherries, dragon fruit and figs, all of which combine to make this one of the most luxurious, healthiest and satisfying overnight oats ever!
Add any choice of toppings you like to give this already tasty porridge your own personal touch.
- 1 very ripe banana
- 1/2 cup gluten-free oats (I used Sainsbury's Deliciously Freefrom Oats)
- 1/2 cup almond/coconut milk
- 1 tbsp. vanilla paste
- 2 tbsp. chia seeds
- 1/4 cup organic natural yoghurt
- 1/4 cup agave syrup/honey
- 3 tbsp. organic cocoa powder
- 1 whole dragon fruit
- Handful cherries
- 1 fig
- Handful frozen blueberries
- Mash up the banana and in a jar, add to the milk, oats, vanilla paste, syrup/honey, yoghurt, cocoa powder and chia seeds.
- Mix well so all of the ingredients are blended together.
- Leave in the fridge overnight (or at least 6 hours) before placing in a bowl and garnishing with the fruit.
- Eat, enjoy and shout out 'q-u-i-n-o-a'!
- You may want to add more or less honey/syrup, depending on how sweet your tooth is!
- You may also want to lessen (or increase) the amount of cocoa powder, depending on taste.
