Bollywood movie star and former iss World, Priyanka Chopra, has become the first Indian woman to model for Guess jeans… ever.
Following on from supermodels Claudia Schiffer, Adriana Lima, Alessandra Ambrosio and even Paris Hilton, the thirty one year old model turned actress has made history by becoming the first non white ‘Guess girl’.
Throughout the shots, taken by the musician, Bryan Adams, Priyanka exudes a type of elegance and beauty reminiscent of 1950’s movie sirens. Guess CEO, Paul Marciano, even dubbed her the ‘young Sophia Loren’.
“Priyanka’s confidence, strength and sensuality reflect the qualities I always look for in a model,” says Paul Marciano. “She reminds me of the young Sophia Loren and the top actresses of the 1950s. With the Indian movie industry exploding on a global stage, and GUESS having a brand presence in 87 countries, we could not have found a better global brand ambassador. Choosing Priyanka reinforces our celebration of multi-talented, dynamic and accomplished women.”
This is undoubtedly a step forward to bringing more diversity within the modelling industry which is still, even today, accused by many – including Naomi Campbell – of being institutionally racist.
In The Connexion, supermodel Iman recently highlighted the fact that there were more black models working within the industry in the 1970’s than there are now and, with the blatant lack of ethnic models that graced the runways at this year’s recent fashion week, it’s clear that as much as it is good to see Priyanka take on the role as the new ambassador for Guess, unfortunately the modelling industry still has a long, long way to go.
